Why: Director Payal Kapadia’s debut feature, A Night of Knowing Nothing, screened as part of the Directors’ Fortnight section that runs alongside the Cannes Film Festival, winning the Oeil d’Or award for Best Documentary. The mostly monochrome film, based on letters from an unseen protagonist to her estranged lover, went on to win the Amplify Voices award at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was called “One of the year’s most electrifying debuts…(that) announces the arrival of an audacious cinematic talent.”
